Our Biggest Paper Sacks Upgrade

Pope Packaging NZ 2 min read
Pope Packaging has completed the largest single investment project in its 70-year history, significantly expanding its Paper Sacks manufacturing facility in Adelaide, Australia.

The expansion is great news for our New Zealand customers, providing greater security of supply, shorter lead times and access to advanced packaging technology manufactured locally in Australia.

Building on our existing Windmöller & Hölscher (W&H) equipment, the investment has doubled printing capacity and increased converting capacity by 50%. The upgraded facility also includes additional warehousing, new technology and greater manufacturing flexibility.

Paper Sacks Expansion for Customers

For businesses across New Zealand, reliable packaging supply is essential. Our expanded Adelaide operation strengthens our ability to meet customer demand while reducing reliance on imported finished paper sacks.

Key benefits include shorter lead times, increased safety stock, reduced working capital holding costs and lower supply chain risk.

Pope Packaging CEO and Chairman Craig Elkington said security of supply was a major driver behind the investment.

“With our increased production capacity and footprint, Popes now offers unmatched security of supply, especially when compared to import alternatives.”

The expansion also brings production and warehousing together on one site, supported by advanced warehouse management software that improves stock visibility and accuracy.

More Capability, More Opportunities

New Zealand customers can also benefit from expanded manufacturing capabilities, including 8-colour printing and digital pasting technology.

The new W&H Miraflex II printing press can produce photo-like, 8-colour graphics at speeds exceeding 1,000 bags per minute, creating opportunities for high-quality packaging that stands out.

Digital pasting technology is available across all three converting lines, providing greater manufacturing flexibility.

The facility also introduces inner patch capability, opening opportunities for packaging applications previously unavailable through Australian and New Zealand manufacturing. This capability is being developed for future customer applications.

General Manager, Pope Packaging New Zealand, Mark Longley, said the expansion strengthens the company’s ability to support New Zealand customers with reliable supply and advanced packaging solutions.

This investment reinforces Pope Packaging’s long-term commitment to customers across Australia and New Zealand.
